Smoking tobacco outdoors is a thing of the past in the city of Boulder, Colorado after the City Council voted unanimously to adopt an outdoor smoking ban.
The latest smoking ban expands on an existing ban that prohibited smoking at the Pearl Street Mall in 2012 and included the Cigar Area and near Boulder High School last year. The new measure prohibits smoking in the downtown business district, city parks, open spaces, within 25 feet of bus stops, multi-use paths and entrances to buildings.
The new smoking ban applies to tobacco and electronic cigarettes.
According to Boulder Mayor Matt Applebaum no one came forward to oppose the smoking ban.
The ban will apply within the boundaries of the downtown business district, which extends several blocks around the Pearl Street Mall, including alleys within the district, all city parks and open space, Chautauqua, Flatirons Golf Course, multi-use paths, within 25 feet of those paths, and within 25 feet of bus stops and building entrances.
Enforcement will begin with warnings and signage before tickets will be written starting in May.
Boulder, Colorado is home to 103,000 residents over 25.7 square miles and was founded in 1866.
