The right to smoke is under fire on a global level, and Australia which was the first to introduce plain packaging laws has seen Sydney ban smoking in the main pedestrian zone of Martin Place on Monday.
The move which was passed by the Sydney City Council is part of a 12 month trial that could lead to a smoking ban in all public open-air parts of the city.
Martin Place is a pedestrian zone that stretched for four city block in the heart of the business district.
Sydney, Australia is home to 4.5 million residents overĀ 4,689 square miles.
