1/19/2015: The City Council of Tybee Island in Georgia is moving forward with a potential smoking ban what will prohibit smokers from lighting up on the beach.
City Councilman, Rob Callahan proposed the measure after the island completed sand placements on the beaches.
The logistics of enforcement are an issue according to Councilwoman Wanda Boyd who said that the ban would be an enforcement nightmare. However, Councilman Callahan believes the measure can be enforced by non-smokers.
The City Council plans to speak with local businesses about the proposal before voting.
Tybee Island, Georgia is home to 3,000 people over 3.2 square miles and was founded in 1502.
UPDATE 3/2/15: The city council approved the proposal and city leaders are now working on drafting an ordinance. The ordinance could designate areas for smokers, as well as impose some serious fines. It is not expected the proposal will be ready prior to the 2015 tourist season.
