When it comes to cigars, there is only one company that can pull off a name like Nasty Fritas. The latest Unico series release from Drew Estate is described as a conical vitola. The name translates as, Nasty to Fry which doesn’t sound inviting from a purist stand point. But then again, Drew Estate isn’t a purist type of company.
Cigar Review: Liga Privada Unico
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Brazilian Mata Fina
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 4″
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Nasty Fritas (Pyramid)
The Look: Packaged in 50 count boxes, the cigars are laid out in alternating directions. The band of the cigar sits a 1/4 of the way from the bottom and denotes, “Nasty Fritas.” The conical-shaped cigar features a closed foot and a tail on the cap. In the hand the Connecticut Broadleaf is silky under the fingers and some visible veins.
The Notes: The cold draw has a sweetness that reminds me of an egg cream. Granted not many people know what that is but it is made with 1 oz of chocolate syrup and 1 oz milk that is stirred. 8 oz of seltzer is then added to the glass. It’s a New York original much like the brand Drew Estate. The aroma off the foot is identical.
Once the cigar is lit there are notes of char from the edges of a grilled steak as well as a subtle sweetness. As we progress the cigar develops notes of pepper and some leather on a rather short finish.
The second half sees the char begin to fade away as it is replaced by a strong espresso. The retrohale serves up some continues notes of pepper and leather, while the later remains on the finish which is more lengthy as the cigar progresses.
The Finish: I hesitantly smoked this cigar. I say this because I was worried the size would lead to a burn that was a bit hotter than I would like. This never appeared to be the case. The cigar which is made from smaller leaves left over from the No. 9 and T52 delivered so much so I might even like this better than some of the regular production sizes.
