Davidoff Late Hour Toro Cigar Review

With the new Avo 30th Limited Edition review due this week I was hesitant to review today’s cigar because I don’t like to pile up multiple reviews from the same manufacturer. However, I was walking through the store when I was asked by someone, “Hey B, I noticed you reviewed the Robusto and the Churchill, but what is your favorite Late Hour size.” The answer is the Toro, and the customer asked for me to put a review of the cigar, so here goes.

Cigar: Winston Churchill Late Hour
Wrapper: Habano Ecuador
Binder: San Andres Negro (Mexico)
Filler: : Dominican (Olor Viso, Piloto Seco and San Vicente Mejorado Viso), Nicaraguan (Condega Viso aged in Single Malt Scotch Barrels, Estelí Viso)
Length: 6″
Ring Gauge: 54
Size: Toro

The Look: The cigars come packaged in beautiful black boxes that are reminiscent of the Davidoff Nicaragua line, with a slide top. Inside, the cigars are featured in two rows of 10. The Davidoff Winston Churchill Late Hour has two bands with the primary band featuring the silhouette of Winston Churchill in gold on a black background with Davidoff in italic cursive. The secondary band has block letters in gold on black denoting The Late Hour and the size in this case Toro. The wrapper has a beautiful milk chocolate hue to it, with a network of relatively thin veins. The wrapper has a nice amount of oils to it and is fairly heavy in the hand with a nicely packed foot.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Late Hour has that classic Davidoff profile of earth and barnyard notes with a slight mossy component like you would find in Laphroig or other similar scotches. Once the cigar is lit, the first note is oak with a touch of pepper especially on the retrohale of the cigar.

As we smoke the first third of the Toro it definitely feels like it has more body and strength then the other sizes to me. There is more spice to the cigar, but yet it still has that classic Davidoff feel of earth and barnyard notes. As we move about an inch into the cigar it begins to pick up a dark chocolate note with a hint of coffee while on the finish there is a touch of oak that really shines on the retrohale.

The second third seeks oak notes continue with a subtle dark chocolate in the background. As we reach the halfway point coffee notes become dominant with an oak finish. In addition there is a touch of wheat and earth, especially on the retrohale which also has a touch of spice.

As the cigar closes out notes of  coffee remain dominant with an earthy finish. The dark chocolate is still there but it is an afterthought as the cigar comes to a close with an enjoyable earthy and oak component on the retrohale.

The Finish: The Winston Churchill Late Hour Toro sits by itself on the three sizes. It has a great combination of strength and complexity with an outstanding aroma. It burned slow, the ash held on for a long period and it was an enjoyable from start to finish. Definitely a worthy add to anyone’s humidor.

Score: 93
Price: $19.29 / $326.99
