New York Governor To Propose Tobacco Purchase Age Increse To 21

The 56th Governor of New York State, Democrat Andrew Cuomo is expected to submit his 2019 Executive Budget on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019. In the budget is language that will seek to raise the minimum sales age for tobacco products, including cigars to 21.

The proposal will also limit where tobacco can be sold as well as prohibit certain discounts such as buy a certain amount to get one free which could change how cigars are sold, particularly at events where sales reps often do buy 3, get 1 free promotions.

If the measure passes, New York would join California, Hawaii, New Jersey Maine, Massachusetts and Oregon as states to adopt the 21 Movement.
