Earlier this year, Hawaii passed a measure that raised the tobacco purchase age to 21; and now New Jersey is one step closer to become the second state to pass such a measure. If the measure passes it would raise the purchase age from the current, 19.
The bill which is awaiting final legislative approval would be the first change since the state raised the age 10 years ago.
The proposal has at least one Assemblyman, Erik Peterson opposing the measure and we applaud him for his voice of reason, “I have a problem with telling people who can sign up for the military and go to Afghanistan and get blown up, can get married, who will considered to be adults, that they’re not adult enough to make this decision.”
There is no set date as to when the measure will be voted on in NJ.
