Today I decided to take a drive down memory lane to a cigar that earned the designation of ‘2010 Cigar of the Year’. It’s been a long while since I’ve enjoyed one of these, so it’s about time I revisit the brand. The Ortsac (which is Castro spelled backwards) is on deck for today’s review.
What am I Smoking?
Cigar: Ortsac Toro Gordo
Wrapper: Habano
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican
Length: 6 Inches
Ring Gauge: 54
Power: 6/10
Packaging & Design
These cigars come packaged in neoprene & Kevlar boxes of 20 cigars. Inside are the dark looking smokes bearing the red and gold shield on the bands, which can also be found embossed into the lid of the box. I’m a fan of these boxes because once you’re done with the smokes, they make for a great nick-nack travel container for anything your heart desires.
The Look
These cigars look great. Dark and oily. Veins and seams are at a minimal giving it an even appearance. The caps are laid on nicely and it has an even construction throughout. Aromas of cedar and aged tobacco appear from the foot and prelight notes of leather and pepper are right up front.
The Smoke
The first third offers a rich and earthy smoke, and the texture of the wrapper adds a nice grit to the experience so far. The finish is long lasting with notes of pepper and mahogany. An interesting start for sure.
Moving along into the halfway mark and intensity begins to build. This is not a strong cigar, as it tops out at a solid medium body, but the strength of the tasting notes have increased quite a bit. A sweetness begins to develop towards the end of the second third as well.
Finishing up of the Ortsac toro, and it’s staying pretty consistent. The burn line is slightly wavy, but has been a non-issue throughout the smoke. The same rich notes of leather, earth and pepper are still prevalent making for a pleasant and long lasting finish.
Final Thoughts
The Ortsac won Cigar of the Year for a reason, and now I remember why. It was a solid performing smoke through and through making this a workhorse of a cigar. It’s thick and chewy wrapper held up great and added complexity to the experience. Not to mention that these are at an attractive price that makes the Ortsac a must try.
