In case you were living under a rock, the Patriots defeated the Rams by a score of 13-3 in the lowest scoring title game to date. To celebrate winning, Patriots owner Robert Kraft broke out a gorgeous version of the Padron 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Humidor. This version was blue with the words Patriots in silver across the top. Inside the locked humidor was a gold-colored plaque that read, “We are all Patriots.”
The humidor contained the Padron 50 Years cigars that were a mix of Natural and Maduro. A lot of people have reached out to me if I have had this cigar, and today I offer my review of the Padron 50 Years Maduro. This cigar is from one of the refills allowed to owners of the original humidor release.
Cigar Review: Padron 50 Years
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 6.5
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Toro
The Look: The evenly colored Maduro wrapper has some subtle tooth to it and is flawlessly rolled. The cigar features a dual band, with he primary showcasing the Padron logo, with the words 50 Years in gold. Underneath is the secondary band which is an anti-counterfeiting measure. In the hand the cigar is firm with no voids of tobacco, an average weight and a well packed foot. It’s box pressed to perfection.
The Notes: Once we clip the cap the cold draw offers up some notes of cocoa with a hint of cream, while the foot offers up more of a milk chocolate to the nose. After we toast the foot of the cigar the first note was a distinct plum as we settle into the in first third.
As we move a few puffs into the first third of the Padron 50 Years Anniversary Maduro begins to develop notes of chocolate with hints of orange rind. The two play well together giving the this box pressed masterpiece a confectionary feel to it. As the cigar moves toward the end of the third, notes of cedar join the mix with a subtle oat note on the finish. The retrohale offers a bit of pepper to the mix as well.
As we enter the second third the chocolate notes have just about left. There is still a subtle orange rind present with developing earthy notes and continues cedar. The finish for me continues to serve up a touch of oats, but they begin to disappear after the halfway point. The retrohale serves up some notes of cedar and pepper, and the finish is short and smooth.
The final third sees the cigar stay the course for the most part which is definitely welcomed on this incredibly smooth and balanced smoke. As we remove the bands some cocoa sweetness begins to return with a bit of pepper on the backend. The retrohale sees the pepper enhanced with a touch of orange rind on the lingering aroma. While I would described the finish as short on the first two-thirds, it closes out with a moderate to lengthy finish creating a savory experience.
The Finish: The first person to step up and get his Padron 50th was wide receiver game MVP Julian Edelman who could quickly be heard asking for a cutter. The cigar was fitting for the dynasty, as Padron is one of the greatest of all time. They have defined the modern era of cigars, just as the Patriots have defined the modern dynasty.
