The town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island will look into banning smoking on all town beaches, sports field and parks. The move would follow ordinances passed by Newport and Middletown earlier this year.
Town Councilman David M. Gleason asked for the smoking ban to be placed on the agenda at the August 24, 2015 meeting following the request in February by a single resident and Clean Ocean Access a special interest group in April.
Like Newport and Middletown the enforcement will be mostly on the honor system should the measure pass as enforcement has proven to be difficult.
