Regius Red Exclusivo Red USA Toro Cigar Review

According to the Regius website, “The Exclusivo U.S.A. combines a traditional and nuanced flavour with a steady progression with contemporary shapes and sizes, using only the very finest Nicaraguan tobaccos. Each blend is crafted for its respective size, to achieve the optimum flavour and complexity. The concept is a true fusion of the old and new schools of cigar making, taking the best of both in order to create a truly unique experience.” The company which is based in London, makes this blend only available in the USA market place.

Cigar Review: Regius Red Exclusivo USA
Wrapper: Nicaragua (Jalapa)
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 6″
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Toro

The Look: Packaged in boxes of 15 cigars laid out in one row, these aren’t exactly humidor shelf friendly as they take up a larger footprint than normal. Inside, the cigar features a dual band of red, white and silver denoting the brand name on one band, and Exclusivo U.S.A. on the secondary band. The cigar is rolled to perfection with a pigtail cap and a well packed foot. In the hand the cigar is firm with an average weight to it.

The Notes: Once the cap is cut with my go to Lotus Jaws Cutter the cigar serves up a cold draw consisting of a subtle mint, mocha and graham cracker giving the cigar nice subtle sweetness. The foot serves up a subtle mint as well with a honey sweetness on the nose.

Once the cigar is toasted and lit a sweet cedar component envelops the palate. As we smoke deeper into the first third notes of soda bread develop along with a touch of pistachio and earth. The Regius Red Label as a moderate finish in terms of duration and adds some graham crackers to the  profile while the retrohale sees the pistachio components enhanced.

Moving into the second third the earthy notes become dominant with continued cedar and pistachio both of which slide further into the background. As we cross the halfway point there is an underlying sweetness of caramel that becomes the focal point at times, but ultimately the earthiness wins control of the palate. The retrohale continues to serve up nuances of pistachio and a hint of spice.

The last third sees cedar become dominant once again with an earthy undertone a less defined nuttiness. The finish sees notes of spice ramp up especially on the retrohale which sees additional earthy undertones.

The Finish: The Regius Exclusive USA is a medium body, medium strength cigar with an enjoyable straight forward flavor profile that keeps me coming back to it time and time again. While I prefer the classic Nicaraguan taste of the Black Label, the Red Label is a nice change of pace earlier in the day and why I keep a box on hand.
