One of the most popular limited edition releases from RoMa Craft is El Catador de Las Petite Coronas. Thankfully one of my favorites from that sampler pack is available as a regular release and today we look at that cigar. The word Intemperance is defined as “lack of moderation, excessive indulgence” and that sums up me and this vitola.
Cigar Review: Intemperance
Wrapper: Brazil Arapiraca
Binder: Indonesia
Filler: Nicaragua, Dominican Republic
Length: 4″
Ring Gauge: 46
Size: Intrigue (Petit Corona)
The Look: The Intemperance from RoMa Craft comes packaged in cabinet style boxes with a slide top lid. Inside the cigars are packaged in cello and lined up in 4 rows of 6 cigars. The Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper which is amongst my personal favorite is not only flawless, but it seamlessly applied. Looking at the foot of the cigar the wrapper is recessed about an 1/8th of an inch giving the cigar a slight shaggy foot appearance. In the hand the cigar is firm, and the foot is well packed.
The Notes: The cold draw of the cigar tastes like leather. Often people ask me what does leather taste like, well if you want to know cut the cap from this stick, and the cold draw is that taste. The aroma off the foot has a subtle sweetness to it, and once the cigar is lit the first note is a subtle raisin sweetness.
Moving into the first half of the cigar a sweetness develops that moves beyond raises and actually reminds me of fruit strip gum. It’s one of those crazy notes that would shock me if anyone else agreed with. As we get closed to the half-way point that sweetness fades away and the cigar sees the leather notes of the cold draw begin to make an appearance. Just before we cross over the half way point the cigar changes up again.
At the half way point notes of cocoa, cedar and earth begin to develop,. The cocoa provides a nice sweet component while the earth is slight bitter creating an enjoyable contrast and the finish of the cigar reminds me of the char from a barbecue steak while the retrohale has a touch of pepper and more cedar notes.
The Finish: When I want a small cigar loaded with flavor the majority of times I reach for the Intemperance BA Intrigue. For a short 4″ cigar with a thin ring guage of 46 it not only has flavor, but it has complexity and various changes throughout the cigar. Fact in the price and you get a lot of bang for the buck making this one of the true gems in the industry.
