Nebraska Bill Proposes Cigar Store Sales Tax

Yesterday we reported on a proposal  in the state of Nebraska that would raise the tax on cigars by 55% and today the state is back at it again. Ken Schilz, a Republican from the 47th district has filed LB 727 which calls for a 1% tax on tobacco sales that occur at any retailer who possesses a cigar shop license under the Nebraska Liquor Control Act. Illinois Retailers Now Need License To Sell Tobacco

The sale of tobacco in Illinois is illegal unless you have a license from the state. The new law requires all retailers selling any tobacco product to obtain a license from the state. The cost of which is $75.00. According to the state of Illinois, most of the fees collected will be used go after the sale of contraband tobacco. It also gives the state a way to punish those who sell to underage smokers.

Fremont, CA Prohibits New Tobacco Stores

The city of Fremont, California saw the City Council vote unanimously to approve prohibition. The new ordinance will prohibit any new retail tobacco stores from opening. The measure came despite the city staff recommending new tobacco stores under a strict zoning regulation, while the Planning Commission voted in November to recommend a complete band.
