Often at times when I sit down to do a cigar review, I am at a loss at what to smoke. There are many cigars I smoke on a regular basis that we have reviewed in the past. Today was different as I woke up in the mood for a specific cigar, a Tatuaje Cojonu 2012.
The cigar which debuted in 2012 came in three different wrapper choices, Habano, Broadleaf and Sumatra. The name is Cuban for someone who is brash or ballsy. So today to satisfy my craving, we offer up this review.
Cigar Review: Tatuaje Cojonu 2012
Size: 6.5 x 52
Wrapper: Ecuador Sumatra
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Strength: Medium-Full
Source: Two Guys Smoke Shop
The Look: A box press masterpiece the Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 features the classic brown label band with a secondary band of white and gold that denotes Cojonu 2012. Rolled to perfection the medium brown wrapper has a few veins and feels like velvet under the fingers. There are no voids in the box press and the foot is well packed.
The Notes: The cold draw of the cigar is cedar while the aroma off the foot and wrapper is cocoa and more cedar. The cedar is sweet and distinct reminding me of a freshly built humidor made from Spanish cedar.
Once the foot is toasted the cigar there is a subtle spice that has an increased intensity on the retrohale. The cigar has some sweetness to it, that is masked by the abundant cedar notes. Around an inch into the cigar things begin to balance out with notes of coffee, cedar and white pepper.
In the second third of the cigar the coffee notes with elements of mocha really begin to shine and take hold. It is incredibly smooth and delicious with a nice amount of pepper through the nose to keep things interesting.
The last third of the cigar continues to offer dominant notes of cedar and coffee, there are elements of mocha that come and go teasing the palate and keeping the cigar interesting. The pepper through the nose is enough to sneeze at but enjoyable at the same time.
The Burn: A box pressed cigar with a perfect burn describes this cigar best. The razor-sharp combustion line has a medium gray ash with a bit of flake. The draw was perfect with the right amount of resistance and remained lit throughout.
The Finish: Very rarely does the desire for a specific cigar hit me, usually I hunt and peck around the humidor or at Two Guys Smoke Shop and grab whatever catches my eye. Sometimes I’ll wait and see what a rep has to offer if I know one is stopping by the office. The Tatuaje Conoju 2012 Sumatra was a craving today and it hit the spot.
