Tatuaje Seleccion de Cazador (Brown Label) Regios Review

The other day one of our good friends on The Cigar Authority, not to mention a friend of mine walked into Two Guys Smoke Shop and told me he liked the Tatuaje Verocu a lot. Shawn then went on to ask me what Tatuaje cigars do I like, and without hesitation I said the Brown Label. It didn’t pay to mention limited editions that are no longer available like the Tatuaje TAA 2015.

Shawn lit one up the other day and said he thoroughly enjoyed but would love to see a review on it here on The Cigar Authority. So without further adieu we present the cigar from Pete Johnson which is made under the supervision of My Father Cigars.

Cigar Review: Tatuaje Seleccion de Cazador (Brown Label)
Size: 5 x 50 (Regios / Robusto)
Wrapper: Habano Ecuador
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Strength: Medium Full

The Look:  The brown label Tatuaje has a Cuban feel to it with its simple band of brown and white. The Ecuador Habano wrapper has some brindle like effects, and there are a few raised veins as well. The cigar is exquisitely rolled with no soft spots and a spongy foot.

The Notes: Coming from a box with a 2014 date stamp the pre-light draw is loaded with notes of cedar and a slight hay like finish. The aroma off the foot is cedar like as well and a touch of spice which is noticeable on the lips more than the palate.

Once the cigar is toasted and lit the initial notes on the first puff is cinnamon and nutmeg with a touch of brown sugar. Around the 3rd puff into the cigar some pepper notes begin to hit on the retrohale as the brown sugar becomes the dominant note.  As we get to the halfway point of the first third the cigar begins to lose some of that brown sugar sweetness with spice and cedar becoming abundant.

In the second third of the Tatuaje the sweetness remains ever so slightly on the retrohale where it is overshadowed by an abundance of pepper. The primary taste on the palate is nutty with a subtle cedar. The cigar is balanced and smooth effortlessly coming together.

The last thirds sees the nuttiness become an identifiable among, with some cedar present as well. There is a subtle creaminess that gives way to an earthy finish. The aroma of the cigar is woody while the retrohale sees and abundance of pepper.

The Burn: The even burn with a moderate combustion line reveals a medium gray ash that is firm and holds on well. The draw of the cigar was perfect utilize a straight cut. In the last third of the cigar I needed to relight it shortly after I removed the ban, but other than that it performed perfectly with a nice amount of smoke production.

The Finish: Over the years my tastes in cigars have changed going from mild, to strong. I’ve smoked a little bit of everything and found some new favorites. One thing has remained constant and that is my affinity for Tatuaje cigars. While the cigars that I go to will forever be known as the red label, and brown label the Tatuaje Seleccion de Cazador will always have a spot in my humidor.

Price: $10.50 / $236.99

Cigar Notes

  • The brown label remains one of my favorite Tatuaje cigars of all time.
  • I think over the last few years many people have become obsessed with the LE cigars Tatuaje releases and as a result the regular releases are overlooked.
  • When Tatuaje first came out, I remember a friend telling me in 10 years no one will know what Tatuaje is. How wrong was he?
  • I wonder where Pepin and Pete would be today if they had not met. Would either have the type of success they have achieved.
  • I paired the cigar with water
  • Smoking time was 1 hour 45 minutes
