LFD Suave Maximo by La Flor Dominicana – Cigar Review

When you think of La Flor Dominicana, you might think of a ligero laden smoke with plenty of power to go around. However, that’s not the case with the LFD Suave. It’s a more mellow option for those of us who want to enjoy all the qualities of the brand, but not the strength.

What am I Smoking?
Cigar: LFD Suave (Light) Maximo
Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Connecticut
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican
Length: 6 Inches
Ring Gauge: 54
Power: 3/10

Packaging & Design
These cigars come packaged in 25 count black boxes that adorn the LFD Suave name in silver on the top. Although a black box typically means that it’s going to be a powerful cigar, but rest assured, that is not the case. The bands are slightly different from the usual LFD bands, using more black than red. As you can see, the band says “Light” on it, but a recent packaging overhaul has changed the name to “Suave”. It is the same cigar, just a different name.

The Look
The LFD Suave looks fantastic. Seems and veins are nearly non existent and it has an even feel from top to bottom. The caps are laid on beautifully, and the wrapper is a golden shade of yellow. The foot appears to be very well packed, and once cut, reveal prelight notes of cashew and cedar wood.

The Smoke
The first third of this cigar is plenty flavorful despite its mellow bodied feel. Notes of wood, almonds and oak are the main players out of the gate. As the LFD Suave burns down, more nuances of rich cream and black coffee begin to emerge.

During the second third, the cigar started to favor one side while it was burning. However, with no intervention, it had corrected itself. A slight pepper began to build as the ash got longer, and subtle notes of nutmeg powder and peanuts started to come about.

In the final third, and with the cigar starting to warm up, it seems as though the profile became more concentrated. The notes didn’t change much since the halfway mark, but they certainly intensified. It performed as one would expect LFD to perform, and I certainly wasn’t let down.

Final Thoughts
As you know, I am a huge fan of full power and rich tasting cigars. But recently, I’ve been dabbling more and more in the world of milder smokes. I haven’t smoked the LFD Suave in quite some time, maybe 3 years or so, and I’m glad I went back to it. And I’m also happy to see that it’s just the way I remember it.
