Law: Manhattan Beach Public Tobacco Ban

Starting today, Manhattan Beach, California begins enforcing the strictest anti-smoking laws in the state of California. The City Council passed a new law this past June that prohibits smoking in all public places. Smokers who violate the new law face fines up to $1,000. Manhattan Beach, CA is home to 35,000 residents.

Law: Cambridge, MA Bans Tobacco in Public Housing

On August 1, 2014 Cambridge, MA put into effect a policy that prohibits the use of tobacco on the properties of the Cambridge Housing Authority. The policy affects the authority’s 2,700 low-income public housing and prohibits the use of tobacco inside homes, buildings, and anywhere on-site. According to the House Authority, the purpose was to prevent secondhand smoke, which has been disproved by the American Cancer Institute.

Law: Savannah State University Tobacco Free

Savannah State University will go tobacco free effective September 1st, 2015. The new policy prohibits the use of tobacco anywhere on campus, including inside vehicles and outdoor areas such as parks, pavilions, and parking lots.  The University is home to over 4,500 students and 385 faculty members.

Law: Illinois Bans Smoking at State Colleges

On Sunday morning, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation that prohibits smoking on the campuses of all state colleges and universities. The smoking ban takes effect on July 1, 2015 and applies to both indoor and outdoor spaces. According to Gov. Law: Kent County, DE Park Smoking Ban

Despite recent reports questioning the effects of second-hand smoke, Kent County officials in Delaware are looking to ban smoking in parks. This week country commissioners voted 5-2 to make changes to the ordinance. The ordinance must pass two more votes. before becoming official. Law: Arlington, WA Park Smoking Ban

The city of Arlington, WA moved one step closer to becoming smoke free on the 11th of August as city staff presented a proposed law to ban tobacco from city parks. The law which has been discussed since 2006, but was not formally introduced until this week will allow police to detain those who are suspected of crimes.
