Law | Lafayette, LA Defeats Smoking Ban Proposal

Score a victory for smokers, as the Lafayette City-Parish Council voted 5-4 against a proposal that would have banned smoking in bars and unincorporated areas of the parish.   Opponents of the ban sided in favor of business, saying that the decision should be left up to bar owners, not government. The measure failed to get votes needed despite a push from local musicians.

Over the last few months the Cedar Rapids Parks, Waterways and Recreation Commission has discussed a ban for city parks, trails and recreational venues including the city’s four golf courses. Law | Middletown, RI Considers Smoking Ban

On Monday, the town council of Middletown, Rhode Island voted unanimously to hold a public hearing on June 1st regarding a proposal to ban smoking at all public beaches, parks and recreational spaces in town. According to Middletown Beach Commission Chairman Rian Wilkinson he believes smoking on the beaches might cause some beach-goers to leave and never come back. Law | Eugene, OR Mulls Sidewalk Smoking Ban

In the city of Eugene, Oregon the City Council is set to discuss a potential smoking back on downtown sidewalks as well as Park Blocks and Broadway Plaza. While note vote is expected at this Wednesday’s meeting it is on the agenda to be discussed and was introduced by Councilor Greg Evans who said one day he wants all smoking outlawed in public places.
