Cigar Review | Byron Habaneros

A few moths ago two new sizes of the Byron were introduced and we reviewed the Gran Poemas. Today we follow it up with the Byron Habaneros a 6 x 56 Serie Siglo XX. Each Byron cigar is said to be blended like a Cuban cigar from a specific century and this one is modeled after the 20th Century. In the past we have reviewed the Londinenses and totally loved it so today’s cigar comes with high expectations.

The Look: Perhaps one of the best packaged cigars in the industry today the Byron comes packaged in tube that also works as a humidor with a sponge located int he foot and a chamber that runs up along the side of the tube. Inside the cigar is wrapped in cedar with a band denoting Selected Tobacco while the cigar has a dual band of Byron and 5 Anos. The milk chocolate-colored wrapper is flawless and rolled to perfection.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Byron Habaneros has some sweetness it and oyster crackers that has me craving some lobster bisque for lunch. The foot of the cigar has just a tobacco aroma making the star of the show the sweetness at the current point and time.

Once the cigar is lit the sweetness of the cold draw shines through with notes of caramel. There is also  slight shortbread note with a wonderful warm graham cracker aroma. There are a lot of subtle nuances going on as well.

In the second third the sweetness begins to fade as some cashews come to play with a touch of leather and citrus. There is a creamy finish with hints of raisin and the introduction of cedar has the third comes to a close. Through the nose the cigar continues to be smooth but there is a faint vanilla on the retrohale.

The last third of the Habaneros sees the wood note become dominant with some sweetness remaining through the nose. As we get past the band, the cigar sees some pepper through the nose. There are some subtitles of nuts, butter and leather throughout the last inch of the smoke.

The Burn: The Byron Habaneros is a slow burning masterpiece with a solid white ash that is without flake and holds on solidly for more than half the smoke. The draw of the cigar served up a slight resistance and the cigar burned perfectly while remaining lit from first light to last puff.

The Finish: For me the Serie Siglo XX is the go to cigar in Byron. While the Habaneros has seen the blend tweaked slightly in terms of the primings of tobacco; the cigar delivers in typical pricing. A lot of times pricing can effect a rating of a cigar, however, the Byron is worthy of every penny and then some.
