Cigar Review | Davidoff 25th Anniversary

Originally released in October of 2013, The Davidoff of Geneva 25th Anniversary was limited to 3,000 boxes. The cigar was released to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the creation of Davidoff of Geneva which was created to allow the Swiss company the ability to enter the US market after the company left Cuba over issues on how its cigars were made.

As luck would have it Two Guys Smoke Shop still had 6 in stock, which is now down to 5.

Cigar: Davidoff 25th Anniversary LE
Size: 5 x 56
Wrapper: Dominican Republic (Yamasa)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Source: Two Guys Smoke Shop
Strength: Medium

The Look: The Yamasa grown wrapper is the same as on the Davidoff Puro d’Oro though not quite as dark in my humble opinion. The cigar features two bands, one being the classic Davidoff of white and gold, and the other denoting, “Davidoff of Geneva 25th Anniversary”. The cigar has some thin veins and is well rolled. Despite feeling firm in the hand, the foot of the cigar looks slightly under-filled.

The Notes: Once the cap is clipped i expected that typical barnyard note that we have come to expect from Davidoff, however that was not the case here with a sweetness that reminded me of dried apricots. The foot of the cigar did have some notes of earth and hay but also some buttery richness.

After the first third is toasted the initial draw of the cigar serves up some notes of oak and a hint of leather. It all seems to change as we retrohale the smoke and some subtle hints of vanilla and jasmine join the mix.

As we enter the second third of the cigar the notes of jasmine remain but the wood becomes softer and more cedar like. There is a continued sweetness, though it loses the vanilla essence which is replaced by mocha with a hint of Cuban coffee (which is very sweet).

The last third of the Davidoff 25th continues to evolve. The notes of jasmine have been replaced, and the cigar begins to take on notes of earth, nuts and a slight mocha. The aroma becomes meaty like a streak grilling on the barbecue in your neighbor’s yard. The cigar is incredibly smooth on the retrohale and has a buttery finish.

The Burn: When it comes to draw, Davidoff is constantly one of the best. The draw is smooth with a slight resistance that defines perfection. The firm and light color ash holds solid for each third of the cigar, and the burn line get sharper and thinner which each pull of the stick.

The Finish: The comes off as one of the most complex Davidoff cigars I have smoked to date and it is a shame that they are no longer made. It is a blend that I would love to see again but for whatever reason they were limited to 3,000 boxes of 10. In the end the cigar is worth every penny and something I wish I had more of.

Score: 97
Price: $22.00
