For the past 6 years Crowned Heads has offered a cigar for the Tobacconist Association of America that shares the same TAA initials. Like years past The Angel’s Anvil is made at Tabacalera a Alianza S.A. under the supervision of Ernest Perez-Carrillo. This year the cigar is limited to 1,000 boxes and it serves as today’s review on The Cigar Authority.
Cigar Review: The Angel’s Anvil by Crowned Heads
Wrapper: Brazilian Arapiraca
Binder: Ecuador Sumatra
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 6 1/8″
Ring Gauge: 50
Size: Toro
The Look: I look at the box and I can hear Chris Berman say, “Da Raiders” in my head. It’s black and silver with a slide top lid. Inside sits 20 cigars in two rows of 10. The cigars feature a dual band with The Angel’s Anvil serving as the primary and a secondary foot band denoted Crowned Heads. The foot band is something that should of happened a long time ago as it is needed to put focus on the company name. The Arapiraca wrapper is oily and coarse under the fingers at the same time. It’s evenly colored but toothy with a slightly porous role. In the hand its firm with a well packed foot.
The Notes: The cold draw has a meaty taste to that is reminiscent of jerky with a touch of coffee bean in the background. The aroma off the foot is sweet like a cinnamon graham cracker with a subtle nose tingling pepper.
As we toast and light the cigar the first notes are like are like a smoked brisket which leave me salivating. As we progress further into the first third the smokey qualities remain with touches of fig, mocha, and pepper. It’s a wonderfully complex cigar that sees the smokey notes enhanced on the retrohale.
The second third sees notes of figs become dominant around the halfway point. The smokey meat flavors remain in the background but they slowly begin to fade. As the second third comes to a close a definitive coffee bean begins to take hold which is enhanced on the retrohale.
As the cigar concludes there are notes of chocolate, figs and coffee bean. The depth of flavor remains until the cigar is put down which amazes me especially since I smoked this one to the point of not being able to hold it. The retrohale offered some pepper and coffee as well which added to the over all experience.
The Finish: Wow. I’ve smoked all The Angel’s Anvils to date and this one is by far the most memorable. It might just be the signature stick of the entire Crowned Heads lines as well as being one of the best cigars to come from Tabacalera La Alianza S.A. The depth of flavor and the subtle nuances were extremely enjoyable and is definitely worth tracking down.
