In 2018, the state of Illinois saw the House and Senate pass a Tobacco 21 bill. That bill made it to the governor’s desk where it was vetoed. In 2019, the House and Senate once again passed a Tobacco 21 law and sent it to a new Governor.
On Sunday, Governor JB Pritzker signed the bill into law which goes into effect July 1st.
Illinois becomes the 10th State to to raise the tobacco purchase age joining California, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington in raising the tobacco purchase age to 21. While Maryland and New York have sent bills to the Governors desk in their respective states.
