Crafted to honor the original 2005 launch of the JFR line—short for “Just for Retailers”—the JFR 20th Anniversary showcases a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over Aganorsa-grown Nicaraguan binder and fillers. It’s a celebratory blend built to deliver bold flavor while paying tribute to the roots of the JFR brand.
A 6.5 x 52 firm box-pressed cigar finished with a pigtail cap and a closed foot. The wrapper wears a dark chocolate color with tight seams and a smooth yet sandy texture, showing little to no sheen. It feels well packed and very firm in the hand, giving the impression of a dense, flavor-forward smoke.
The cigar opens with earthy tones and toffee, supported by dark roasted coffee in the background. A sweet pepper note emerges, reminiscent of an Italian pepper cookie, followed by brownies, almond, charred oak, and a subtle sourdough bread character that adds depth and balance.
Maduro sweetness takes center stage as caramel notes develop. Spice and pepper become more noticeable, while the almond profile intensifies, evoking an almond cookie dipped in coffee with just a dash of milk. The profile remains rich and dessert-like without becoming heavy.
Earth and mild espresso lead the way, joined by baking spices and dominant baker’s chocolate. Leather and white pepper add structure, while a sweet donut note and mocha-like sweetness round out the finish, keeping the profile engaging through the final puffs.
Flavor, flavor, flavor. This is a beautifully constructed dessert-style maduro that delivers bold character without crossing into overpowering territory. The draw was excellent and smoke production was voluminous, filling the room with pleasant aromas reminiscent of a kitchen preparing for a big holiday get-together. Some STARS noted some burn and construction issues that impacted the overall score, & many also correctly identified this as the JFR 20th Anniversary—including a first-time reviewer—showing just how distinctive and recognizable this cigar’s blend & look truly is.
