Tomorrow on The Cigar Authority we will be talking about cigars that we are holding on to, and cigars that we wish we had. What does that have to do with today’s review? Nothing other than the fact we will light up the LFD Special Edition Football cigar in the second hour. Back in 2014, The Cigar Authority conducted a blind taste test where we removed the original bands from the cigar and replaced them with a numbered band. The result was the La Flor Dominicana 1994 winning.
Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana 1994
Wrapper: San Andres
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Length: 5″
Ring Gauge: 52
Size: Robusto (Conga)
The Look: The cigar represents the 20th Anniversary of LFD which has farms in the Dominican Republic and offices in Coral Gables a section of Miami, Florida. In the hand the cigar has a nice feel to it, and the foot is well packed with a nice swirl of ligero tobacco in the center. The wrapper has a nice oily sheen to it, and the band features the flower from the top of a tobacco plant. The cigars are packaged in cabinet style boxes containing 20 sticks.
The Notes: The cold draw of the La Flor Dominican 1994 a sweet flavor profile consisting of marzipan and molasses while the foot of the cigar sees an abundance of molasses notes. On the first draw of the cigar there is a subtle sweetness with a touch of pepper creating an interesting yin-yang effect.
As we smoke the first third the cigar there are some delicious notes of molasses and chocolate. The retrohale of the cigar serves up some pepper notes that brings a familiarity to the cigar. However, the palate experience is wonderfully different then the stronger offerings of the now 24 year old company. As the first third of the cigar comes to a close the molasses really begins to stand out and it carries over into the moderate finish.
As we enter the second of the cigar a touch of orange citrus appears, but the stick remains wonderfully sweet with continues molasses note. Around the half way point of the smoke the molasses slides into the background as some dark chocolate emerges and becomes the dominant profile.
The last third of the cigar has some growing spice through the nose and as the cigar comes to the a close the dark chocolate remains the focal point where it carries over to the finish.
The Finish: In a world where consumers often ask what’s new instead of what’s good, the La Flor Dominicana 1994 gets overlooked as we gravitate toward La Volcada, La Nox or even the Andalusian Bull if you can find them. However, the 1994 is a cigar you should be picking up to smoke, after all 480 people voted on it in the blind test.
