The city of Muskogee, Oklahoma is taking steps to enact a new ordinance that would ban smoking on property owned by the city.
The move was made at the request of local health officials in order to guarantee eligibility for future grants. The new ordinance is scheduled to take effect January 1st, 2016.
The item must be ratified by the unions of the police, firefighters, and non-uniform employees that occupy the property.
The Deputy Mayor, David Jones, has already chosen the side of smokers rights and has opposed the ban “I am definitely against smoking, but I am also a strong proponent of individual rights,” Jones said. “I think we are taking more of them away from people, and I think government is doing it, so I am against this.”
Muskogee, OK is home to 39,000 residents over 38.76 square miles and was founded in 1898.
