Law | Palo Alto, CA Considers Tougher Smoking Restrictions

The city of Palo Alto is getting ready to make it even tougher for smokers to light up. The new changes will extend the ban to all commercial areas including downtown and the Stanford Shopping Center.

The potential new ban could go into effect as soon as tonight when the city council meets to discuss the new extensions.

City Councilman Greg Scharff says, “I definitely support it. First of all, it would make enforcement so much easier. It’s a lot cleaner downtown and on California Avenue” adding, “Right now, you can’t smoke within 25 feet of a doorway. But no one really knows what that means, but to say you can’t smoke on University Avenue, that’s a lot clearer.”

Palo Alto, California is home to 66,000 residents over 25.79 square miles and was founded in 1894.
