Perdomo Habano Barrel Aged Sun Grown Review

Late last year the Perdomo Habano Barrel Aged had a branding change and a blend change. While Perdomo says the original line was Barrel Aged as well, the new version sees a cigar made up of tobacco leaves that are one priming higher than that of the previous blend. The result is a richer cigar due to the longer fermentation process the tobacco now requires.

The wrapper of the Sun Grown Perdomo Barrel Aged spends 10 months inside a Bourbon Barrel before being applied to the cigar.

Cigar Review: Perdomo Habano Barrel Aged
Size: 6 x 54 (Epicure)
Wrapper: Nicaragua Sun Grown
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua (Condega Aged 4 Years, Jalapa Aged 5 Years and Esteli Aged 6 Years)
Strength: Medium

The Look: Bronze. Looking at the newly branded Perdomo Habano Barrel Aged Sun Grown you can’t help but notice the bronze foil work on the new bands that gives the cigar an industrial look. Beneath the band the sun grown wrapper is cocoa in color and absolutely flawless. The cigar has a nice weight to it with no soft spots and a well packed foot.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Sun Grown version of the cigar sees the bourbon notes however they aren’t as dominant as on the Connecticut. The primary notes are nutty and earthy with some spice on the lips. The aroma off the foot of the stick is that of heavy mesquite that is amazing.

Once the foot is toasted and the cigar is lit the cigar has some notes of maple and walnuts to start. Through the nose and on the aroma there are some spices and a bourbon like finish. The bourbon like finish is dominant, but there is also a nice nuttiness and spice present giving it a wonderful complexity.

The second third sees the cigar develops more of the bourbon notes with a dominant nuttiness on the palate. There are some subtle spices on the finish and on the retrohale. The aroma of the cigar is intoxicating and enjoyable. As the second third of the cigar closes some sweetness begins to emerge.

In the last third of the cigar some notes of chocolate develop that take over as the dominant note with an espresso finish. There is some spice present through the nose, but the bourbon barrel aging really shines at this point on the retrohale. The finish of the cigar is moderate in length.

The Burn: The Sun Grown version of the Perdomo Habano Barrel Aged has a slow burn that is absolutely meticulous. The thin combustion line reveals a solid light color ash that holds strong throughout the duration of the smoke. The cigar has perfect draw and remains lit from first light to last puff.

The Finish: As I expected when I reviewed the Connecticut the Sun Grown would be more in my wheelhouse. While the Connecticut was excellent, the Sun Grown is a step above with more complexity and makes the cigar more than a bourbon barrel aged cigar. The final third of the cigar was extremely enjoyable and I plan on purchasing a box to smoke now and see how they age.

Cigar Notes

  • I know Perdomo says the original line was Bourbon Barrel Aged; but I don’t remember the subtle nuances of the bourbon ever existing on that cigar.
  • Of the three blends, I love the look of the Sun Grown the best especially the bronze coloring of the brand.
  • The cigar really changed up in the final third that less a solid impression on me.
  • Would love to pair this cigar with a Bourbon or a Cafe Con Leche
  • Smoking time was over 2 hours.
