Virginia Legislator Proposes Raising Purchase Age to 21 *Updated 1/30*

In the state of Virginia Del. Chris Stolle, R-Virginia Beach has introduced a bill to ban the sale of all tobacco and nicotine products to anyone under the age of 21. The state of Virginia is major tobacco producer but it is also the home of Altria who has endorsed a national standard of 21. The bill has also gotten the support of Speaker of the House Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights.

House Bill No. 2748 is A BILL to amend and reenact §§ 18.2-246.8, 18.2-246.10, and 18.2-371.2 of the Code of Virginia, relating to purchase, possession, and sale of tobacco products, nicotine vapor products, and alternative nicotine products; minimum age requirements; penalties.

While the measure is aimed at vapor products it will also include cigars if passed.

Update 1•30•19: The Senate version of this bill has passed by a margin of 32-8. It is now headed to the House. The Senate version was sponsored by Republican Senators Thomas Norment, Siobhan Dunnavant and Bryce Reeves as well as Democrats Adam Ebbin and Richard Saslaw.
