Atabey Idolos 4 x 55 Cigar Review

For the last show of 2019 we smoked a cigar from The Cigar Authority Care Package that we consider to be a pretty damn special cigar. For us at The Cigar Authority, Atabey is a cigar that stands above all else. It’s a cigar that has consistently gotten a 100 rating here on The Cigar Authority and it has gotten accolades by others in the industry as well. At the 2019 IPCPR Atabey introduced a new size to the market named Idolos which measures 4 x 55. The name Idolos as you would guess translates to Idols.

Cigar Review: Atabey Idolos

Length: 4″
Ring Gauge: 55
Size: Idolos

The Look: The Atabey Idolos is packed in a gorgeous looking white lacquer box. Inside sits 25 cigars measuring 4 inches with a 55 ring gauge which is reminiscent of Nub. While the blend is not disclosed the shade grown wrapper has a golden appearance to it with a nice amount if oils visible. In the hand the cigar is firm and hefty with a well packed foot.

The Notes: The cold draw of the Idolos has a wonderful sweetness to it reminiscent of figs and a hint of dried plums. The exotic taste of the cold draw isn’t visible on the aroma of the foot which is loaded with cedar and a subtle black pepper that brings me on the edge of sneezing. After we toast the foot of the Atabey the initial note is an abundance of cedar.

Moving into the first half of the Atabey Idolos it comes off as more medium plus in terms of strength instead of the mild-medium that I’ve come accustomed to. There are notes of cedar with an abundance of nuts and some brown sugar on the finish that really shines on the retrohale of the cigar.

In the second half the brown sugar note becomes dominant with a subtle molasses/maple in the background that almost gets lost in the cedar components. It’s remarkably smooth as I smoke it right down to the nub, pun intended. It gets sweeter as the cigar progresses with some subtle pepper on the aroma.

The Finish: When I first saw this size comes across my desk I was ecstatic which is weird because I never smoke a cigar of a similar size. However, I wanted to try this and I am glad I did. While I still prefer the Bujos or Spiritus, the Idolos was still outstanding and it lasted me a solid 90 minutes. It was rich and robust, with some added strength to it that was a welcome addition to the Atabey line.
