La Flor Dominicana Capitulo II Cigar Review

La Flor Dominicana was founded in 1996 in Santiago, Dominican Republic and while Litto Gomez might be the co-founder of La Flor Dominicana and the face of LFD, his son Antonio Gomez has gotten more involved in the blending process as he spends most of his time in the Dominican Republic.

The first project for Tony Gomez was the La Flor Dominicana Chapter One, which was followed by Capitulo Dos (Chapter Two in Spanish) and most recently Tony put his stamp on La Nox.

According to the La Flor Dominicana website the, “The brainchild of Antonio Gomez, this series is characterized by its ambitious pursuit of power and flavor. These cigars are packed full of our Dominican ligero tobacco and feature a Brazilian Habano and Nicaraguan Colorado wrapper respectively. The result is a rich and intense experience for only the most seasoned cigar smokers.

Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana Capitulo II
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Factory: Tabacalera La Flor S.A.
Wrapper: Nicaragua Colorado
Binder: Ecuador Habano
Filler: Dominican Republic
Length: 6.5 Inches
Ring Gauge: 58
Vitola: Chisel

Source: Samples supplied by La Flor Dominicana

The Look: Packaged in 10 count boxes with 2 rows of 5 cigars the first thing you notice when you open up the box is the reddish hue of the wrapper which is accentuated by the red and gold bands. The mahogany color wrapper is flawless applied right down the chisel tip which is allegedly a favorite of Rush Limbaugh. The cigar has a hefty weight to it with no voids of tobacco and a well packed foot.

The Notes: While the way to cut a chisel is often debated between bullet punch on both sides, pinching it, or a straight cutter I opt for the latter nine out of 10 times. The cold draw of the cigar serves up a raisin like sweetness with accents of cedar, earth and subtle spices. The nose off the foot of the cigar has a dominant red pepper and cedar.

Once the cigar is toasted with my Vertigo Intimidator the initial notes are leather and earth, but as the cigar progresses some nuttiness that borders on almonds enter this mix providing a subtle sweetness. Through the nose there is a touch of mesquite with some red pepper. The mesquite note provides a subtle BBQ like aroma that pulls you in to the experience.

As we transition in the middle of the Capitulo Dos; the flavor profile remains similar with notes of leather and earth. The nuttiness that was a defined almonds in the first third has become a bit generic at this point. Through the nose the red pepper notes have subsided and the aroma of the cigar is earthy.

In the last third of this offering from La Flor Dominicana the cigar remains unchanged with continued notes of leather, earth and a nutty finish. Through the nose the red pepper returns and there is a little touch of sweetness on the finish of this strong offering.

The Burn: The La Flor Dominicana Capitulo II offers a perfect draw that leads to a nice slow smoke. The burn line can be jagged at times and perfect most of the time as the cigar self corrects as needed. The light color ash held strong, but I did need to relight the cigar in the second half the smoke.

The Finish: This might be the strongest offering in the La Flor Dominicana portfolio and while I like strong cigars this one is outside my comfort zone. However, when it comes to reviewing cigars I find it is important to review them with an open mind. The flavors of the cigar are easily identifiable and there existing of multiple flavor profiles makes this cigar complex. It is however a bit one-dimensional as there isn’t much change throughout the duration. If you like a cigar that is strong to the extreme, then this might be for you.
