Law | India Raises Tobacco Age to 21

It will soon be illegal to smoke in India unless you are 21 years old. This comes on the heels of India passing a law that makes it illegal to smoke in public.

The new ordinance is also calling for a raising of the fine from 200 Rupees to 1,000 Rupees which is the equivalent to $16 USD.

According to an official in the health ministry, “The ministry is in the process of finalising the proposed amendments and is likely to go the Cabinet this week”.

It is estimated that 35% of those in the country use some form of tobacco.

India is home to 1.2 billion people over 1,269,346 square miles and became a country in 1947.
