In Des Moines, Iowa a new bill has been introduced in the State Legislature that would require casinos to comply with the state’s smoking ban. Currently, casino floors are exempt from a 2008 law that prohibits smoking in public places.
The bill is sponsored by Senator Herman Quirmbach, a Democrat from the 23rd District who has been a member of the senate since 2003. According to Senator Quirmbach, there is a broad public support for such a change.
The proposal has support from across the aisle in the form of Republican Governor Terry Branstad who favors the measure and has indicated he would sign it into law.
The bill is expect to face opposition from the casino industry.
Iowa is home to 3.1 million residents over 56,272 square miles and became a state in 1846.
