Gran Abuelo

Abuelo Gran Abuelo Cigar Review

Abuelo Gran Abuelo is a tribute to the grandfather figures who helped shape our lives, and fittingly, it delivers a smoking experience that feels both traditional and comforting. Crafted at Fabrica de Puros Aladino in Honduras, this hefty Gordo features Honduran-grown Cuban-seed Corojo fillers and binders beneath a Habano wrapper.

The cigar presents beautifully with a light milk chocolate-colored wrapper, subtle reddish hues, visible veins, and tightly applied seams. In hand, it feels firmly packed and ready for a long, leisurely smoking session.

The first third opens with a surprisingly complex combination of sweet and savory flavors. Notes of cedar, earth, sweet tobacco, berries, and floral nuances immediately stand out, accompanied by touches of graham cracker, tea, vanilla bean, and salted nuts. There is a delicate pepper presence in the background, while flavors reminiscent of pecans, corn flakes, oatmeal, spice cookies, and even a hint of chocolate pastry add depth and character.

As the cigar moves into the second third, the profile shifts noticeably toward a richer, wood-forward experience. Oak and cedar become dominant while leather, black coffee, earth, and rye emerge with greater intensity. The sweetness from the opening third takes on a butterscotch and molasses quality, complementing flavors of roasted nuts, nutmeg, and baking spices. Pepper becomes more assertive without overwhelming the blend, while subtle notes of anise and dark chocolate add complexity to an already engaging middle section.

The final third continues along the path established in the middle portion, emphasizing wood, leather, tobacco, and black coffee. Sweetness becomes more restrained but never completely disappears, lingering as a sweet nuttiness alongside musty earth, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cedar. A touch of pepper remains on the finish, joined by subtle savory qualities that add depth to the closing moments. While the transitions become less dramatic, the cigar maintains its balance and flavor concentration all the way to the nub.

Construction was excellent, with great smoke production, an easy draw, an even burn, and a razor-thin burn line. Aside from slightly flaky ash at times, the Gran Abuelo performed beautifully and delivered a long, enjoyable smoking experience. Overall, this is a complex, balanced, and well-crafted Honduran cigar with approachable strength, big flavor, and a satisfying mix of sweetness, wood, spice, and earth.
