In Massachusetts, Lee, Lenox and Stockbridge fall under the Tri-Town Board of Health and on October 19th the Board passed a measure raising the tobacco age to 21 joining 74 other towns and municipalities in the state. The measure which was originally slated to be phased in over three years will go into effect on January 2, 2016.
The city of Mobile, Alabama saw the City Council extend its smoking ban from restaurants to all city-owned or operated premisses including parks and public libraries. The ban also includes a 50 foot buffer zone. The ban which includes cigars was voted on by the City Council and saw one vote against the measure. The comes three years after the City Council approved a ban that included most public places including restaurants but excluded bars. […]
As we reported yesterday, the first city in the state of California that raised its tobacco purchase age from 18 to 21 was under threat of a lawsuit due to its violation of state law in raising the tobacco age. Yesterday, the “Board of Chosen Freeholders” voted to approve an ordinance that now makes Essex County’s 33 parks smoke free. The measure which was pushed by the “Global Advisors on Smokefree Policy” advised the board throughout the drafting process. Essex County which is home to Newark joins Burlington, Camden, Hudson, Passaic, Somerset and Union as counties that have passed a smoke free parks law. Earlier this week the city of Rockville, Maryland saw the City Council vote 5-0 to ban smoking in the city owned plaza in the middle of Rockville Town Square as well as city parks which includes Red Gate Golf Course that is owned by the city.
